Remodelling Jewellery

At Katherine Seaman Jewellery we can transform your sentimental and unworn gold and gemstone jewellery into some truly meaningful.

Below is an example of how a piece was created using the customers' own gold.

handcarved blue ferris wax bangle

The bangle was hand-carved in wax and made to fit the customer perfectly.

Using wax is a fantastic method as you can try it on and any alterations can be made before casting in your old jewellery.

The customer supplied the gold. In this example there was a mix of 9ct, 18ct and 22ct. Ideally the same carat would be used to preserve the finesse.

Gemstones were unset and returned to the customer. If your gemstones are suitable they can be reused in your design. Alternatively, we can course a variety of gemstones for your design.

yellow gold bangle that has been cast

Back from the casters using the ancient lost wax casting method, this process is outsourced.

The extra gold at the bottom of the bangle is called the button and sprue. This is where the additional 40% of gold is required. The button is removed and is returned to you.

Finally, your new piece is sent to the London Assay Office to be hallmarked.

What metals can be used for repurposing?

We can use your exiting yellow gold of any carat to reuse in your new design. Ideally all the gold supplied will be of the same carat (all 9ct or 18ct etc). White gold can be a little temperamental and issues can occur when repurposing. If there is a mix of carat weights then the resulting piece may be hallmarked as a lower carat.

If your jewellery is not hallmarked there may be extra charges test the finesse of the gold.

Silver is not recommended to repurpose unless sentimental as it will cost much more than sourcing new silver.

How much will it cost?

Remodelling starts from £450. The price will vary greatly depending on the complexity of the design and whether gemstones will need to be sourced or more gold supplied.

Can my gemstones be reused?

Absolutely! Please note there is always a risk when removing stones from jewellery that they could break. This is very unlikely, particularly in the case of diamonds, rubies and sapphires but we cannot be held responsible for this should it happen.

I don't know what my gemstones are, can you verify them?

Yes, if you are unsure what gemstones are in your jewellery my local expert gemmologist can test them for you at an additional charge.

How much metal do I need?

This will depend on the finished design but as a rule of thumb approximately an extra 40% of the weight of the piece is required.

What if I don't have enough gold?

If your piece requires extra gold this can be supplied for you. The price for this will be valid for 14 days due to the fluctuation of gold prices.

How long does repurposing take?

The timeframe for bespoke jewellery varies depending on the complexity of the design but we advise 8-12 weeks from the time the deposit is received.

Will my new jewellery be hallmarked?

Yes, all my jewellery is sent to the London Assay office to be tested for the gold content. A full traditional UK hallmark will be applied.

Can silver jewellery be repurposed?

I generally advise against using existing silver jeweller for remodelling unless it is sentimental as it is likely to be much cheaper to use new silver.
