During my A Levels I wasn't sure what I wanted to do for my next step, my favourite subject was design and technology so I enlisted on a foundation art course for a year at a local college. It was perfect, covering every aspect of art and design where we were able to try our hands at pretty much anything; from photography and lino printing to installations and textiles.
One of my lecturers had been a student at Middlesex University and had studied jewellery design there. I had expressed my interest in the field and she set up a bench for me in our studio where I could practice simple piercing into copper sheet.
We did an enamelling session at the college with a small kiln available to use which I loved. For my final project I was inspired by textures and surfaces within nature and urban environments and set out to recreate these with enamelling. Some of the enamelled pieces I made were photographed with a macro lens to show the details.
During this foundation year I applied for a place at Middlesex University for the jewellery design course which I was offered a place. I was to spend the next four years immersing myself in the wonderful world of jewellery.
Below are some images from my final exhibition. Here is a close up of some of the enamelled piece. Each section was cut and formed to create a 3D structure and stitched together using copper wire.
