They're supposed to be a girls best friend but do you know everything about diamonds?
Countries of Origin
Diamonds can be found in over 30 countries which include Angola, Australia, Botswana, Namibia, Russia, South Africa and Canada.
Colours
As well as the classic white diamonds they are also available in natural colours. the most common are yellow, orange, cognac and black. Pink and blue diamonds are much rarer and there much more expensive with the latter being the most expensive.
The famous blue Hope diamond was bought by the banker Henry Philip Hope in the 1830's. It's a brilliant cut cushion which weighs 45.52 carats. The pendant is surrounded by 16 white diamonds and suspended on a chain that contains 45 white diamonds.

Lab Grown Diamonds
Lab grown diamonds, have been around since the 1950s but in recent years have become much more popular. Lab grown diamonds are identical to earth mined diamonds in every way, except that they are grown in a lab. They have the same chemical, physical, and optical properties as mined diamonds and exhibit the same fire, scintillation, and sparkle.
There is so much to discuss about comparing lab grown to mined regarding price, ethics and environmental factors to name a few so I'll write a separate blog about this.
Caring for your Diamonds
Diamonds are the hardest natural substance ever known and can only be scratched by another diamond, they are 10 on the MOHS hardness scale. However, they can still be suspectable to chips, cracks and scratches. Therefore it is advised to remove your diamonds when using chemicals, or doing any physical activities. Always interesting to learn about gemstones, we love them but know little about their origins etc.
